Immigrant Integration Index in Romania (IIIR)

This research was financed via Asylum, Migration and Integration Fund and implemented with the support of the Romanian General Inspectorate for Immigration. The research took place in two stages:

  • 2020 -2021: Romanian Center for Migration Studies and Social Integration
  • 2017-2019: Romanian Center for Migration Research

The Index of Immigrant Integration in Romania (IIIR) aims to be a research on immigration and the process of integration of immigrants in Romania. The study is guided by two premises intensely debated both in the academic literature and in public policy. The first premise is that certain socio-demographic characteristics of immigrants (i.e. the legal categories of which immigrants belong and the rights or social status related to those categories) can have a major impact on the integration process in the host society. For example, third-country nationals have a number of restricted political and civic rights compared to immigrants who are citizens of European Economic Area states or compared to those immigrants who have acquired Romanian citizenship. Thus, these limitations may be reflected in the civic or political involvement and integration of immigrants. The second premise is related to the fact that the structure and organizational model of the host society has a strong impact on the success and the way in which immigrants are integrated. This premise is usually studied internationally by comparing two or more countries that offer different social or political contexts of integration. However, in countries such as Romania which are characterized by significant differences and inequalities between different regions of the country, this comparative perspective may also prove fruitful for inter-regional comparisons.
