Presentation by Andreas Haas from Arbeiterwohlfahrt Württemberg, Württemberg, Germany: „Labour Migration – a solution to the problem of Germany’s ageing society?”

In an ageing society, care for the elderly is becoming increasingly important. However, there has been talk of a shortage of skilled labour in geriatric care for years. Due to the shortage of skilled labour, geriatric care facilities in Germany cannot be fully occupied despite waiting lists. This means an additional burden for the elderly, their relatives and carers.
This trend will intensify over the next few years: Many skilled workers will themselves retire and baby boomers will come to care facilities as patients.
Targeted migration of labour can offer a solution. However, this raises many questions: How can migration be organised in a sustainable and socially just way for the countries of origin? How do we integrate the skilled workers not only into work but also into German society? What challenges do we face? What political decisions do we need to make in order to experience migration?
Andreas Haas from Arbeiterwohlfahrt Württemberg will answer these questions. He is a recognised expert on the migration of care workers and is in close contact with numerous partner organisations around the world.
