International Summer School on Brexit and Migration “New Challenges of Migration in Turbulent Times”, Turda,  Cluj, 01 to 05 October

Introduction

Two migration-related issues dominate European debates nowadays: the arrival of large waves of refugees and irregular migrants from the outside of Europe, primarily from the East and South, and Brexit. If the first topic emerged dramatically after and partially due to the asylum seekers crisis in 2015, the second deals with challenges posed by Brexit on the freedom of movement of Europeans. The aim of the International Summer School on Brexit and Migration “New Challenges of Migration in Turbulent Times” is to provide a learning environment for 30 young people interested in the topics of migration and debate possible effects of Brexit in Europe and beyond.

Teaching staff includes members of the Romanian Center for Comparative Migration Studies and of the Rațiu Center for Democracy as well as other academics and policy professionals dealing with migration in the context Brexit. In addition to lectures, interactive workshops and debates, the program will include field trips to communities, to companies and public institutions directly impacted by Brexit. The combined insights from political, economic, sociologic, legal and anthropological approaches on migration and Brexit will enable participants to return home with a deeper understanding of one of the most complex and multifaceted phenomena affecting Europe today. The summer school proves, also a unique opportunity to network with other participants’ trough out the world and take advantage of the research facilities provide by the teaching staff.

Participants will be encouraged to translate perceived societal problems into socio-scientific research questions or intervention projects.

Date and Location

The third edition of the migration summer school will take place between Tuesdays 01 October and Saturday 05 October 2019 at the Rațiu Center for Democracy in Turda, Cluj County (Romania). Participants are expected to arrive in Turda on Monday 31 September and leave on Sunday 06 October 2019.

 

Eligibility

Successful application to the summer school has to satisfy the following criteria:

  • A good working knowledge (speaking and writing) of English
  • The availability to attend the entire period
  • A proven interest in international migration
  • A relevant degree in Social Sciences (BA, MA, PhD, etc.) or equivalent experience

Fees

For 2019 the fee is 300 RON (aprox. 65 EUR). The fee includes:

  • 6 nights hotel accommodation at Casa Rațiu https://casaratiu.ro/
  • 3 meals per day at Casa Rațiu (vegetarian and other food preferences possible)
  • All the materials
  • Wi-Fi access
  • Social activities
  • Coffee breaks
  • Field trips

Scholarship

Two scholarships of 1200 RON will be funded by the Rațiu Center for Democracy and the Romanian Center for Comparative Migration Studies on a merit base. Scholarships will cover the participation fee (300 RON), travel expenses (up to 500 RON) and implementation costs for the intervention in the society (up to 400 RON)

The scholarships will be awarded to candidates according to the following criteria:

  • Self-motivated and able to write and present a clear community intervention project on the topic of migration and Brexit;
  • Writes a 2000 words community intervention project on the topic of migration and Brexit in the application form;
  • Presents and receives feedback on the community intervention project during the summer school;
  • Applies the developed community intervention project after the summer school.

Travel

All participants (excluding participants who are awarded scholarship) are kindly requested to organize and cover expenses for their travel to and from Turda.
